Indexable inserts are the ceaseless hard-workers and all-rounders in modern machine tools. In order to leave flawless surfaces after machining, the indexable insert edges must not show any signs of damage. The indexable inserts are therefore replaced regularly at fixed intervals. When indexable inserts are replaced, the tool has to be recalibrated and this procedure is work-intensive and therefore a cost driver in the process. The 3D inspection of the indexable inserts, which inspects every indexable insert in the tool for edge and surface wear according to specified tolerances or error sizes, provides a remedy and thus cuts costs. Indexable inserts are then only replaced when it is really necessary and pertinent errors exist.

Indexable inserts are scanned by a 3D sensor off-line in the tool on several planes. In order to be able to reach every position, the 3D sensor can be moved to the respective position by a robot to enable the scanning process. Other scanning and automation concepts are also possible on request. The 3D scanner is designed according to customer requirements (measuring field, minimum error size to be detected, resolution and scanning time). Typical sensor data of implemented applications are, for example:

  • Measuring field approx. 35x35x5mm
  • 3D resolution approx. 18x18x2µm
  • Scanning time approx. 1 to 2s per indexable insert
  • Distance of sensor from the scanning surface approx. 80mm

The CV_Inspect system software is parameterizable and can be adapted to different indexable insert shapes. The first step consists of complex preprocessing of the 3D data including 3D plane fitting. Errors are specified and classified in 3D – criteria are parameterizable.

In addition to the time saving due to the omission of unnecessary tool calibration times, the flawless surface of the machined parts is an argument in favor of the 3D inspection of the indexable inserts because there is no need for costly surface inspection of the finished part.
